CHARACTER INFO
Name: Ichabod Crane
Canon: Sleepy Hollow
Canon Point: S01E08
History: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleepy_Hollow_(TV_series) and sleepyhollow.wikia.com/wiki/Ichabod_Crane
Personality: Ichabod is a man completely lost, away from his time and home, but still able to cope. His ability to adapt has been pushed to the limits, not only has he recently been faced with modern technology and cultures, but he finds himself suddenly in the middle of a fight between the supernatural forces of good and evil. The future of the world has been thrust on his shoulders and he faces it with bravery, yet can admit at times he’s tired and scared. He’s willing to stand before the worst of the world in order to protect the best. It’s not unlike what he was doing during the Revolutionary War. He chose the side that had the most honor and righteousness, in his mind, even if that meant becoming a turn coat against his own nation. His sense of morality is very strong, but flexible. He’s able to apply it to a given situation and find his own opinion without surcoming to the pressures of common belief.
Worse than being lost in time, Ichabod has lost his wife. He truly loved the woman and was able to accept and continue loving her after finding out she was a witch. When he was injured on the battlefield, she saved his life, but also helped curse him to his fate. His love and his loyalty were strong enough to overcome what has happened. One of his main goals, beside saving the world, is getting his beloved wife back.
Ichabod studies everything around him, including people. He can be very perceptive and reacts to moods even those one is trying to hide. He is often able to confront people on lies based on either body language or word choice. He often finishes Abbie’s, his partner and best friend, sentences even when they had only know each other a few days.
His friendship with Abbie is a marvel of his own ability to overcome what he was taught. Not only does he accept a woman as his equal in a partnership that involves mystery and violence, but he’s almost indifferent to the fact she’s black. Coming from an age where slavery was the norm, although not something he approved of, it shows his ability to be free thinking. Instead of treating her as a lesser, she quickly became his rock. They saw the impossible together and it connected them. Their fates have been intertwined for longer than they could imagine and he’s willing to tell her exactly that. He’s protective of her, but never overbearing. He can allow her to take the lead as needed and gives guidance where he can.
Although not all of his mannerism or opinions from that era are completely gone. He still acts the part of gentleman, opening doors and such, but he’s never truly pushy about his place. His sensitivities are still locked in the past though. When he’s confronted with a rather suggestive advertisement on the internet he is obviously flustered and slams down the screen when it doesn’t stop. He is often confused in conversations as he doesn’t understand modern references and is completely lost with technology. He often by passes phrases he doesn’t understand or waits for Abbie to explain. He rarely approves of what he learns.
Ichabod often uses humor to defuse a situation. When Abbey needed comfort and he was unable to give it her, he explained that he was simply too tired to lie. It made her laugh and eased even the worst of situations. He used his wit with Abbie’s sister to ease her into speaking with him and given the circumstance it worked. He isn’t above correcting others, especially if it has to do with his time period and he can be a bit of a know it all about subjects he understands. He has a quick wit that can both amuse and annoy those around him. He can be stubborn at times. He insisted on talking to the horseman, knowing the risk, just because he needed information. He even yelled at her momentary when overwhelmed. He seems like a control man, but he does have anger inside of him, rage even. When he is confronted with a beast that threatened his wife and child, he insisted on going back in and killed the beast without mercy. There are lines he will not see crossed.
Ichabod is being tested to the extreme and yet refuses to break. He’s still able to smile at the end of the end of a day and toast to a new family. His goals are driven by his passions, the need to save the innocent and find his wife. He’ll do anything to protect Abbie and save his wife. He can be selfish when it comes to those he cares about. He was even willing to kill himself if that meant killing the Horseman when he learned they were connected. It’s his connection with these people that keeps him focused and helps to find a way in what is turning out to be a rather topsy turvy world.
.
Abilities: Ichabod has an eidetic memory, which means he can clearly remember anything he sees. He can also see demons which is a still he hasn’t perfected and comes in flashes. It’s not something he fully understands or can make himself use. While in no way is he a super soldier, he is a trained fencer and know to use a firearm.
First Person Sample: Dear Reader,
As we all find ourselves in a rather difficult situation, it is of the utmost importance to get to know one another. Myself and Miss Abbie Mills will be serving tea and refreshments at noon on the fifth in our apartments. This may be of the most interest to you if you are aware of what an iPod is. If you find you are in need of a guide to certain social graces, I, as a travel of both the new and old, would be willing to offer my services. No fee.
No RSVP necessary. We await the arrival of as many as that have need.
Sincerely
Ichabod Crane
Third Person Sample: The streets were so familiar his heart ached. He touched the stone work of the building as he walked and listened to his feet on the cobble stone. The smell in the air, while not the most pleasant, reminded him of his youth. If he was a more expressive man he might jump for glee or skip, but he wasn’t prone to such exaggerations and didn’t plan to start them now. He was smiling though, a mischievous little grin that he couldn't’ for the life of him wipe off his face.
He had been so long away from civilized life. The tempo of everything was slower, more ordered than in that future world. It seemed a fever dream, unreal and so distant. Could it be possible that none of it had come to pass? That he’d been injured in battle, sent home to heal and had woken up on a train.
No, he thought and stopped himself. He clenched his jaw and pulled his hand back. It hadn’t been a dream. It hadn’t been some fancy. Abbie wasn’t some figure he’d made up. The shock and horror at that idea brought him back to his senses. He stood straight and fixed his coat. It was this world that was the falsity and he had to get back. He had work to do, a world to save and he wouldn’t be seduced by the creature comforts. That must be it. Another trick of Moloch’s. His pleasure turned to disgust and his steps started again at quicker pace, with purpose. He must find a way out of here and he’ll start with those railroad tracks and work his way back.
